As Doctors of Pharmacy, Elizabeth's and Jason's passion for chemistry and great wine proved a natural fit when they chose to plant a small test vineyard of various grape varietals to include Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Gewürztraminer. They applied the same method of employing evidence-based research as they have done in the practice of medicine to the making of wine utilizing the grapes they had grown. The quality and character of those wines serves as the basis for the processes Dodge-Penrod Winery employs in making its wine. They also chose to focus on the making of the wine rather than the growing of the grapes, leaving that to expert farmers who focus solely upon that task; growing and harvesting impeccable varietals. From these California farmers is where Dodge-Penrod Winery sources its grapes. We hope our wines will convey our dedication and attention to detail we employ in selecting those grapes and transforming them into what many have called absolutely great wine!
Elsia was the first of our four Weimaraners and our love and dedication to her as well as her unmistakable personality is reflected in the quality and character of the small lot Zinfandel which carries her name.
Made with grapes sourced from a small plot of old vines, the limited production of just 2 to 4 barrels per year, a slow and lengthy fermentation followed by 28 month aging in oak barrels ensures every bit of character is captured from the grapes resulting in a wine with the deepest of ruby red and all the intensity and flavor that one would expect from a powerful Zinfandel.
